Jeff leads the Vine Lab wine tasting group on Monday evenings but the Twin Cities Somms group has started another group on Tuesday evenings, co-led by educator & almost Diploma grad, Karina Roe. Jeff attended their inaugural zoom tasting event and here is what he has to say about it... By the way all students of wine are welcome!
The Twin Cities Somms group has recently started some programming for WSET students. The first is a weekly virtual tasting group using the WSET Systematic Approach to Tasting, specifically at level 3. The focus is to develop both tasting skills in the WSET method and also to work on writing a good tasting note.
The TC Somms are making vials of wine available so everyone can be tasting the same wine and to share the costs. The weekly tastings will focus on two wines and the virtual meetings will last an hour. If interested, you'll sign up for samples and pick them up at France 44 before the event.
I attended the first session and after some introductions we dug right in. We spent some time on wine #1 to go through the method and discuss what is needed in a good tasting note and how to write it under test conditions. Note that the WSET Advanced Test includes tasting two wines.
Then, we jumped into wine #2 and set the timer. 10 minutes to write a complete tasting note, GO! After 10 minutes, a few of us read our notes and we all shared our impressions. While the goal isn't to identify the wine, we did learn the samples were a Sancerre and a Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley. Nice wines! If you'd like to give it a try, or even observe, watch the Twin Cities Somms Facebook page for the next announcement!
